To celebrate 10 years of 5 Seconds of Summer’s debut EP, She Looks So Perfect, I created a special anniversary CD single for the bonus track Disconnected. I repurposed block prints from a personal project and combined that with type manipulation and motion graphics to use on a CD single, mobile and web assets, and merchandise for the song.
When the band first started, they were a rag-tag group of twentysomethings living in Australia. Their image was very heavily focused on 2010s DIY band culture (specifically nodding to the blogging platform Tumblr and its emo culture of the time).
To reflect this I used lots of grunge elements like texture and static to give movement and organized mess to the project. I took the yellow color that was used for the original She Looks So Perfect EP, as well as black, white, and gray to give a grunge, stone-like image with a pop of vibrant color.
In 2014 when this was originally released, social media and streaming were still in their youth. Because of this, I decided to give this single release a heavier emphasis on web content. To bring this song more to the present day I designed a merchandise webpage with motion graphics and a Spotify Canvas video. Both were designed with glitch effects to give it more of a grunge feeling.
Since this is an anniversary release of a CD single I decided to keep the merchandise line pretty limited. In addition to the physical CD, there is also an anniversary poster and tote bag available. Both the poster and the tote bag contain the same block printed phone motifs and the signature yellow to keep them directly connected to the single.
